Closing day is one of the most exciting milestones of your life — and your new home deserves to be shown off. A housewarming party is the perfect way to welcome the people you love into your new space, make lasting memories, and officially put your stamp on the neighbourhood. Here's how to do it right.

Pick the Right Date — and Be Realistic

Give yourself at least two to four weeks after closing before throwing a party. Between unpacking boxes and getting the space feeling like home, you'll want some breathing room. Offer guests two or three date options — a weekend afternoon open-house format tends to draw the most people, while a Friday evening dinner sets a more intimate, relaxed tone. Think about what suits your personality, and plan around that.

Be Thoughtful About Your Guest List

Think carefully about who you want in that space for this milestone. Close friends, family, and new neighbours are obvious choices — but don't feel obligated to invite everyone at once. Your guest count should match your space and your comfort level. A cozy gathering of 15 can be far more memorable than a crowded party of 50 where you barely get to talk to anyone. Quality over quantity goes a long way at a housewarming.

Make It Personal to You

Your housewarming should feel like you — not a generic party from a Pinterest board. Love themed evenings? Go for it. Obsessed with charcuterie and Ontario wine? Build the whole vibe around that. If you're more introverted, consider a smaller dinner party or wine tasting rather than a big open house. The more the event reflects your taste and personality, the more comfortable you'll feel as the host — and the more your guests will enjoy themselves too.

Keep the Energy Up With a Little Fun

Don't underestimate the power of a simple icebreaker. A small raffle — bottles of wine, a local restaurant gift card, or a spa certificate — gives guests something to get excited about and keeps the conversation flowing. A signature cocktail or mocktail named after your street is always a hit. Give people a reason to mingle, and the party will take care of itself. Bonus: it gives you a natural excuse to introduce yourself to anyone you haven't met yet.

Capture It and Share the Moment

Your housewarming is worth documenting. Take a few photos of the space looking its best, snap some candid moments with your favourite people, and share them on Instagram or Facebook with a simple caption like "We're officially home." Tag the people who were there — it's a meaningful way to acknowledge them and create a lasting record of this chapter. And don't forget to send a quick thank-you message to guests after the event; it's a small touch that people genuinely remember.
